The Dallas school board on Thursday passed an anti-bullying policy that includes protections for gay and lesbian students.Read the Story here.
"It is not only the right thing to do, it is visionary," said CeCe Cox, the executive director of Resource Center Dallas. She said she believes the policy is the first by a Texas school district to include provisions for gay, lesbian and transgender students. The policy approved Thursday night is lengthy, detailed and takes effect immediately. The district's definition of bullying ranges from hitting, intimidation and flashing gang signs to making fun of students because of their national origin, family background, political beliefs and other reasons. It also includes provisions about cyberbullying and cyberstalking.
"We have tried to be as inclusive as we can," said trustee Lew Blackburn, who helped draft the policy. "Schools should be one of the places we call a safe haven for kids."
The policy tasks teachers with fostering an environment of tolerance and respect in school. At the beginning of each school year, teachers and DISD employees will go through training on how to notice, report and investigate bullying.
Way to go Dallas!
Now we need the government to step up to the plate. It should be a law for all schools.
A safe environment for all students to learn!
I saw some comments on this subject and they said that singling out the GLBT community will make the "haters" hate more. They are right about that, but we as a nation needs to step up to the plate and say enough is enough. We have been through this type of thing in the past. Women rights, African American rights, Animal rights, now Gay rights.
Why cant we as a nation and world for that matter, STOP with all the labels. We need to have HUMAN rights. Same rights for all?

Hey, Allen - - I miss hearing about your life and what's happening at work, etc. My husband has news channels going all the time at home so I like a break from it on my computer - - - but I will still check in and read what you are writing.
It's sad that it's come down to this, but, yes, I agree, EVERYONE'S human rights needs to be protected. NO ONE should be bullied.
Same rights for all! Amen!
