$25.00 budget for food...

I cannot believe that I have not posted anything since Thursday. Sorry about that everyone. In the past 3 days I have worked 22 hours.

Friday's are pay days, so I was out paying bills and buying food. I am happy to say, that I paid off 2 bills and bought food. This makes me so happy. I have only 1 more large bill to pay off now. But its do able.

When we first moved down, we agreed as a group that we would pitch in for food, but the problem I was having with this is, the food that was being bought was not always food that I would eat or even like. So after my bills were caught up, I decided to buy my own food. I know what I like to eat and what I need for lunches at work. I now have a complete budget for all things. My food budget is set at 25 a week, which is not a lot. I check the newspaper for coupons, so that I can get the best bang for my buck.

Now the problem is, where do I store my food? Grant it, the refrigerator stuff has to be in there, but the rest of it should be where? I thought about it for sometime. I decided to put it in the pantry and see how that goes. Its been three days now, and some of my milk is gone and I feel that my cereal has been eaten. But I have no proof of that. I don't want to be an ass about it, but $25 a week is not a lot of money to feed myself. I have to plan out breakfast, lunch and dinner on that money. That allows me .84 cents a meal. Trust me when I say, that is hard to do.

The other day I baked two Titino's pizza's. ( they are small) plus I was starving. I did not get a lunch at work. So anyways when I was done, I was going to put the rest up for later. Pizza is good hot or cold. Later never happened, cause one of the guys asked if he could have a piece of my pizza, I said sure go ahead.

Michael and Kevin both have been good to me, I have not always had money and they fronted me the money. I since have paid them off. But now I feel bad, if they ask and I say no. I want to say no. Cause I know, that my food is not going to last, if they keep asking for it. When do I start saying no? Or do I sit them both down and tell them how I feel about it? I just don't know anymore.

Any suggestions?
Allen

25 a week is not allot...maybe just sit and talk with them, honesty is usually best;)

This is so familiar...

I believe the only solution is to sit down and talk with them--unless you have space and $$ for a mini fridge in your room. It's not easy but you can write down what you want to say and how you want to say it.

Make sure to state that under less frugal circumstances you'd be happy to share and that if they do want something, to ask you first if you have any to spare before helping themselves.

It's not so much what's said but how it's presented.

You can do this.

Reiterate to them that you're not trying to be a miser but you're just simply trying to get through payday to payday.

Set up boundaries, write names on things, etc.--they may appreciate something like that as well.

Good luck and please keep us posted on how it goes.

Love ya, my friend.

Peace, love, happiness and health,

That's not a lot of money to eat on for a week! How long before you can get more?

Hey there Allen, I agree with Jo and Steven. I've been in this situation before with roommates. I would seriously consider talking to them about it. $25 isn't going to get you very far and you shouldn't be paying for things you don't want/can't use.

Ooh, I don't know. I've never lived with roommates before. I think it's a good idea to talk with them. Labeling doesn't sound like a bad idea either.

Yup - - I agree with what everyone's said. I would consider asking them to help plan a menu on things you all agree on or foods you all like to eat. Then leave a few meals blank so you can eat on your own. Figure the money for all the stuff you like together and split it. Then whatever you buy for the "blank meals", that food belongs to the one who bought it. Talk to them like a "sandwich". The "bread" is praise. Start with appreciation for how they have helped you out; then state your problem, then follow with praise about how much you are enjoying being out of the cold northern states. Labeling stuff is always a good idea. And have your dad or someone pray for you before or while talking with them.
